Golden Beach seawall builds coastal resilience

A smart seawall protecting nature and community.

A seawall was completed at Jellicoe Street, Golden Beach in December 2024.

It was specially designed to handle future climate hazards like rising sea levels and strong storms. The seawall helps protect nearby parklands and footpaths from damage, while also making the area more enjoyable with better access and new seating for visitors.

The project received funding support from the QCoast2100 Program, which helps Queensland communities prepare for coastal changes.

As part of the project, Council added 100 concrete tiles to the seawall. These tiles are designed to create a “living seawall” by attracting seaweed and small sea creatures, turning the wall into a mini marine habitat. This helps the environment while also making the seawall stronger and more natural-looking. The project is part of a trial with the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Queensland Government-funded QCoast2100 Program to install and monitor the living seawall over time.

The area around the seawall was also improved. Council rebuilt the coastal footpath, added a new stairway to the beach, and installed a wheelchair-accessible binoculars station to enjoy the views of Bribie Island and the shorebirds.
