Sunshine Coast Gives a Sheet

3 tonnes of textiles recovered in for National Recycling Week

Despite the lightning and rain, nearly 245 cars donated 3 tonnes of linen and towels to the Sippy Downs location for 2024’s Give a Sheet for the Planet event.

This was a massive jump from the 682kgs of linen collected in 2023! The materials are processed onshore using BlockTexx® S.O.F.T.™ (Separation Of Fibre Technology).  Textiles are separated back into their individual raw materials and reused into the textile industry or into other industries such as building, agricultural and manufacturing.

Three tonnes of linen is equal to 5093 bed sheets or 20,373 pillowcases. 60kg of towels were donated to the Australia Zoo wildlife hospital and the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge. Diverting this textile waste from landfill has prevented 91,680kg of CO2 from polluting the atmosphere.

This event is part of Council’s National Recycling Week efforts. All resource recovery efforts inch us closer to our aspirational target of zero waste to landfill by 2041, outlined in the Sunshine Coast Resource Recovery Strategy 2023. Avoiding waste to landfill also progresses the region towards the targets set out in Council’s Zero-net Emissions Plan (ZNE Plan):

  • 45% reduction from business-as-usual in greenhouse gas emissions from landfills
  • 15% waste reduction for households (per capita)
  • 60% waste diversion from landfills (recovery rate as a percentage of total waste generated)

Keep an eye on Council’s website and social media for next year’s event in National Recycling Week in 2025.
