Protecting our shorebirds: a plan for the future

The Sunshine Coast Shorebird Conservation Plan 2025–30 sets a clear path to safeguard threatened species and preserve our coastal heritage.

The Sunshine Coast Shorebird Conservation Plan 2025–30 has been adopted to safeguard our region’s “little battlers”. Developed with input from Traditional Owners, community groups, researchers and government agencies, the plan sets a clear roadmap to protect shorebirds, some of which are at risk of extinction. It focuses on reducing threats, protecting critical habitats and building strong community partnerships.

Migratory species travel more than 10,000 kilometres from Siberia and Alaska to rest and feed on our sandbanks. The plan prioritises practical actions such as reducing disturbance at roost sites, improving signage and education, and aligning recreation planning with conservation goals.

Council will now deliver an implementation plan that sets priorities, timelines and responsibilities. Progress will be reviewed annually and updated as needed over the next five years. By acting now, we can protect these remarkable species and preserve the coastal landscapes that make our region unique.
