Planning for safer coastal communities
Understanding storm tide inundation.
Storm tide inundation can affect many coastal areas across the Sunshine Coast. A storm tide happens when strong winds and low air pressure from a storm push sea water onto the land. It’s different from a normal high tide because it can cause much more flooding and damage.
In October 2024, Council endorsed an updated Storm Tide Study to help better understand and manage the risks of coastal flooding caused by storm tides.
Changes in the storm tide mapping include:
- Bribie Island breakthrough is now included in current climate mapping.
- Mapping of Open Coast Wave Action areas
- Identifying locations adjacent to smaller coastal creeks where additional allowance is to be added in the determination of new building floor levels.
This study helps Council plan for future coastal changes and supports more resilient communities across the Sunshine Coast.
