Planning for a healthy coast

The coastal areas of the Sunshine Coast are amongst it’s most treasured features—shaped by nature and enjoyed by both locals and visitors. From sandy beaches to rocky headlands and peaceful estuaries, these areas support wildlife, recreation, and community wellbeing. With growing pressures such as climate change and development, it’s more important than ever to plan for a healthy and resilient coastal future.

To support this, the Healthy Coast Management Plan has been developed to guide how the coast is cared for now and into the future. The plan was shaped by community feedback and outlines a coordinated approach to managing the region’s coastal areas.

The plan brings together coastal strategies and actions. It helps manage the natural environment, public spaces, and how people interact with these areas. Key actions include removing invasive weeds, planting native species, improving walking paths, and protecting wildlife. It also supports safe and sustainable recreation such as swimming, fishing, and surfing.

The plan is divided into two parts.

Part 1 outlines the broader context—why the coast matters and the challenges it faces.

Part 2 focuses on specific locations, identifying what’s important in each area and what actions are needed.
