Marine BioBlitz, Ste Everington

Marine BioBlitz a big win for the coast

Celebrating ocean life with hundreds of volunteers and amazing finds.

The Sunshine Coast’s first Marine BioBlitz in 2024 brought the community together in an exciting effort to explore and protect our ocean life and it was a great success.

Volunteers, scientists, students, and ocean lovers joined in workshops, snorkels, boat trips, and surveys. Together, they recorded over 593 species and made more than 2100 observations using the iNaturalist app.

  • 839 participants joined in total
  • 522 people took part in boat-based activities
  • 277 people joined land-based workshops and tours
  • 40 school students got involved
  • Around 500 people visited the BaseCamp at Mooloolaba.

The event showed how much people care about the ocean. It also helped collect important data for the Sunshine Coast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which also protects our amazing marine environments.
