Blue carbon farming trial in the Blue Heart

Australia’s first blue carbon trial underway on the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast is home to an Australia-first blue carbon trial. The project is formally registered with the Australian Government Clean Energy Regulator (CER).

This project is leading the way in demonstrating how blue carbon can deliver multiple benefits, for the  environment and the community.

Two council-owned sites in the Blue Heart (adjoining Unitywater’s Yandina Creek Wetland) are under restoration.  Estuarine wetland ecosystems will be established across the 165-hectare project area. The mangroves and other marine plants that these ecosystems will contain will store blue carbon.

By following the CER’s approved methods for restoration, carbon credits will be generated. These are a financial product that can be traded or sold. Governments or private entities may buy carbon credits so to meet their commitments to carbon reductions. Learnings from the project will shared with landholders in case they with to investigate their own projects.

The project will capture carbon that can offset Council’s emissions and may provide future economic opportunities for the community. This project is also supporting a healthier Maroochy River for everyone to enjoy.
