Sunshine Coast officially becomes a UNESCO biosphere.
The Sunshine Coast local government area has now been recognised internationally as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Sunshine Coast council, on behalf of our community, led the nomination for our region to be recognised by UNSCO as an international site of excellence, known as a biosphere.
Council has a clear vision for what we’re hoping to achieve for our region. A UNESCO Biosphere credential supports us to protect and enhance our economy, lifestyle and environment for future generations. It aligns with our vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region — healthy, smart, creative.
Becoming a biosphere gives the Sunshine Coast further national and international recognition. Biospheres create niche markets for products, services, facilities and practices. This is significant for the agricultural, forestry, fisheries and tourism sectors. Our biosphere will help local businesses grow while attracting more investment to our region. That means more jobs for local people.
