The Banksia Sustainability Awards are the longest-running sustainability awards globally and are regarded as the most prestigious of their kind in Australia.
Council was awarded the winner of the government category for its proactive plan to deliver a healthy environment and liveable Sunshine Coast. This is the second consecutive year that council has received this national award for sustainability following last year's win for the Mary Cairncross BioBlitz.
The Environment and Liveability Strategy exemplifies our region’s forward thinking and real actions to plan for and manage growth as we respond to the impacts of a changing climate.
Our Strategy has played an important role in guiding the achievement of a number of significant outcomes. These include launching our Australian-first Blue Heart partnership, progressing a UNESCO Biosphere nomination, developing a Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy and expanding our green spaces by securing more land for conservation and recreation.
Together with the Regional Economic Development Strategy and our Community Strategy, the Environment and Liveability Strategy provides a comprehensive policy framework to guide and shape the future of our Sunshine Coast.
This recognition provides inspiration to continue doing the work we do to achieve our vision of being Australia's most sustainable region.
